I wanted to share a case with you, though I was only the scale provider.
Mom worked with a fabulous pediatrician who was open to helping to find a
solution and giving time for it to work. Mom had done her own research, found her
own answers, and just needed to borrow a scale to be sure it was not volume
related. Below is her story in her own words. She wanted to share it with
Lactnet because Lactnet is where she searched for answers. She wanted to have
it in the archives for someone else in the future.
The Mom's Story:
I had a full open Gastric Bypass in November of 1997 and have had no
complications. Prior to becoming pregnant, I did not take supplements and luckily
for me, my numbers were ok. During my pregnancy, I had about 3-4 months where
I was severly anemic and was treated with iron infusions. After receiving
several treatments, my levels returned to normal and the rest of my pregnancy
was uneventful. My baby's weight gaining history has been slow right from
the start and was getting even slower. At birth she weighed 6lbs 8ozs, two
weeks 7lbs 1oz, 2 months 8lbs 3ozs and 4 months 9lbs. Her growth lengthwise was
never an issue as well as her head circumference, both were normal. I found
some info on Lactnet #151413 and began a regiment of daily multi vitamins
for the baby (Poly Vi Sol 1mL) and 2,500 units of SUBLINGUAL B-12, a Rx iron
supplement and my Rx prenatal vitamin (both of which I took during my
pregnancy). Currently, my baby is gaining appropriately and I have seen a physical
change in my milk's consistency when I pump. It has changed from looking like
extremely watered down skim milk with a small layer of seperation on the top
to looking like skim milk on the very bottom, whole milk in the middle and a
layer of seperation at the top.
End of story.
Her baby is doing great. Saw the pediatrician and all is fine and mom
reports she is also feeling much better herself.
Take care,
