Hi All

There is great debate in the maternity suite where I work as an LC.

I am finding we are looking after a lot more small babies and now management has asked a few of us to have input on feeding guidelines relating to 35-37 week babies.

Has anyone written guidelines? would you share them with me. I find that most of these babies are being normalised ie "on demand feeding" and when I get asked to have input they have lost lots of weight and because of poor suckling, have to give formula and then the mum has to do catch with expressing /pumping.
Another issues is the use of nasogastric feeds, there is a reluctance to use a ng tube and again baby spirals with weight loss and has to have catch up. Does anybody routinely put a ng tube in. and in what time frame, is it the assessment of the feeding or the age?.
Thankyou in advance of any help given.

June Nicholls
IBCLC

Thankyou
