Mentioned in the article are the Entertaining Science Nights at the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York's Greenwich Village:

http://www.corneliastreetcafe.com/down.htm

It's not an event created by partnering with a science center, but it is a mixture of science and art -- kind of like this place, the Hudson River Museum, but for 18+ and with a wine list. It's also not as much a free-for-all as some of the events mentioned.

I went there and saw a cabaret performer expound (complete with powerpoint presentation) on the evolution of sex, and afterward a biologist expound on the lives of canopy-dwelling frogs. Fun, funny, and bizarre.

The most important thing will be finding someone who has the knowledge and the persona to make it work. I'm not saying it will be hard -- many scientists all but grab people off the street to show them the things they have discovered -- but choose well.

This spring I have invited New York's Redshift Productions up to the Andrus to perform a rock opera called "Galileo: The Emotional Life of a Spacecraft." Can't serve alcohol here, but I'm doing what I can to get both "sides" of the brain fired up...
