Maybe they just need to go back to Edison's tried-and-true "electrocute
an elephant" techniques!

More seriously, there's a huge populist inventors' movement, evidenced
by the Maker Fairs, Dorkbots, and similar events all over. So they may
not be rock stars, but they are flooding the indie inventor market.

There's a show in Boston called DESIGN SQUAD in which a team of eight
kids build crazy machines. The hosts, Nate Ball and Deanne Bell, might
be a great choice. http://pbskids.org/designsquad/cast.html They might
even chip in some swag since they will air starting in Feb 2007 and
probably want to promote with your kind of audience.

I think the MythBusters guys are perfect, actually. True, they're not
known
as inventors, but they are definitely known by kids and parents; they
inspire people to think about the science behind "why?" in analytical
(and
fun!) ways; and yet they're not SO huge as to overshadow the content.

Thomas Edison was the Bill Gates of his day, but today, inventors just
aren't celebrities anymore.

We are working with the Lemelson-MIT Program to create an
invention/design
challenge event for high school students in May that will include a
theater
presentation of their award-winning inventors.
We are looking for minor to even somewhat major celebrity types who
could
energetically get the kids excited about the day and to help facilitate
the
inventors' presentations.

We have looked into the MytheBusters but don't think its quite the right
fit. They need to be somewhat connected to design and innovation, fun
and if
possible be recognizable and yet, not completely overshadow the
award winners themselves. Not asking for too much....

If anyone has any thoughts or recommendations they would be most
appreciated.
Thanks,
Lynn
