Cindy, in response to your query about Raynaud's. Moms can have what seems
to be a Raynaud's-type pain without the tri-phasic color change associated
with Raynaud's. Anderson et all in 2004 Pediatrics has a great article to
share w/HCPs: Raynaud's phenomenon of the nipple: a treatable cause of
painful breastfeeding. Pediatrics. 2004 Apr;113(4):e360-4. Lawlor-Smith also
examined this http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/314/7081/644 I've
encountered this phenomenon in moms who also don't blanch but describe pain
after feeding. Does she report pain while the baby is nursing, or just
afterward? Sometimes the nipple will be perfectly round and they will still
report pain. It is doubtful this mom has yeast. There is a great discussion
of breast pain/yeast in Barbara Wilson-Clay and Kay Hoover's BF Atlas.

I wonder if compression or painful latch in the early days triggers
continued pain in these moms? But your mom is immediate pp.... Comfort
measures like dry heat might help and pumping on the very lowest setting
possible. Wouldn't hurt to measure the pressure on her pump as well, to make
sure it is not too high. Referring her to her HCP would be appropriate. I
try to never forget that sometimes, the sx are not about bf, but something
else. HTH.
Warmly,

I have a mom who's baby has a good latch and positioning, but still
complains of nipple pain. There is no blanching of the nipple or
compression stripe. She states that she had this same problem with her
older child. She said that with her older child she was treated for yeast,
but it did not help. The baby is less than 48 hours old. She also complains
of pain when she pumps. Could this be Raynaud's Syndrome even if she does
not have white blanching of the nipple?
Thank you
Cindy Fairchild RNC, IBCLC
