I'm lazy, so I'm just going to forward this in whole - it is a post I
had posted to a couple of extended nursing lists (where one lady
suggested posting here too), so it is a little slanted to that
respect, but I hope some of you very knowlegable ladies here can help
me out - I REALLY don't want to wean my daughter (3.5y) over this,
but my nipples are starting to feel like chopped liver some days
(like the days when she nurses as much if not more than my 1 month
old).
We've tried working on her latch (she's fine for awhile, but after a
few mintues it gets worse and worse), we have no thrush, and I've
tried almost every position under the sun (and then some) - the
cradle hold seems to allow us 3-5 minutes, rather than the 1-3
minutes the other positions allow before it starts to get
uncomfortable/hurt, but we've tried her sitting/kneeling beside me,
football hold, I've even had her stand behind me and drape over my
shoulder (see, I told you I was desperate), laying, laying with her
behind me and draped over my side, etc with little to no success. I
notice it hurts faster/worse when I'm tandeming her sister and have a
good letdown - the harders/faster suck seems to make things go
downhill faster. :(

Does anyone else have this problem? My second child has a gap
between her front teeth - she has also had an......uncomfortable (for
a lack of a better word) latch as a toddler/preschooler, but after
nursing thru my pregnancy, I REALLY noticed it - even now, I notice
it more - and frankly, at times, it HURTS (when she gets the nipple
tissue suctioned in the gap).
I don't want to wean her over this, so I'm trying to find a solution.
Since I'm not familiar with a nipple shield, having never used them,
does anyone think that this might help? Basically, I'm looking for a
barrier that will stop my nipple from going in between her front
teeth - I've been tempted to chew some gum and kinda 'wrap' her front
teeth with it (as if she were to bite part way down into the wad),
but I'm worried that she'd swallow it, and frankly, I don't wanna be
chewing gum that often.....which got me trying to think of possible
barriers, that still allowed nursing - and why I thought possibly of
the shield.
Anyone else have this problem, and if so, how did you solve it? I've
tried getting her to open more, to get a better latch, but that
doesn't seem to help. And for those who are familiar with a nipple
shield, would it work in this case? If so, what kind of a dollar
amount am I looking at for this solution - are they pretty cheap, or
pricey?
