What this should read is "in mothers" not "in breastfeeding mothers." I
want statements of appropriate parenting not to take sides. When we in the
lactation community keep making the distinction of only rules applying to
"breastfeeding" mothers, this continues to give reasons for mothers to choice not to
breastfeed and clinicians to tell mothers that they cannot give their milk
to their babies.
Can anyone guess this is a hot topic for me?,

Well, Ann, it is for me, too.
I tend to teach my studends that most substance abuse issues (be it alcohol, medications, recreational drugs or whatever) are responsible parenting issues and much less breastfeeding issues. Children born from mothers that use unwanted substances did get it during pregnancy as well and most effects are worse via the placenta than via mother's milk.

Warmly greeting,
Gonneke, who is very glad to be back on lactnet after a too long nomail due to lots of factors, including moving back into The Netherlands
