Marianne -

Science Education did a special supplement on informal science in July 2004.
Likewise, Journal of Research in Science Teaching dedicated an issue to
informal science as well (Vol. 40, No. 2 - 2003). Both are excellent
resources. One article in particular from JRST addressed learning in museums
of natural history - Cox-Petersen, Marsh, Kisiel, & Melber, "Investigation
of Guided School Tours, Student Learning, and Science Reform Recommendations
at a Museum of Natural History." While not specific to worksheets, you might
find it applicable to your research.

You can also try: Gottfried (1980), "Do children learn on school field
trips?" Curator, 23, 165-174; and Price & Hein (1991), "More than a field
trip: Science programs for elementary school groups at museums."
International Journal of Science Education, 13, 505-519.

Finally, Elsa Bailey did a review of the literature on science museums and
schools which can be found at
http://www.astc.org/resource/education/bailey.htm. I found that a helpful
start to my own review. To answer your last question, I usually use Eric and
PsycInfo to start, get my hands on a few good articles, and then use the
reference sections of those articles to find others. The Science Ed. issue
is full of great articles with great references.

I'd love to hear more about your goals once you get your hands on the
studies about worksheets if you get the chance. Feel to respond off-list to

Subject: ASTC Listserve: Articles on museum work sheet use?

Hi all!

I am working on a manuscript on the use of work sheets by school groups at a
natural sciences museum, but having a hard time finding literature on this
subject. (I realize that there might not be published a lot.)

I've already got McManus (1985), Fry (1987), Burtnyk (2004), Parsons & Muhs
(1994), Kisiel (2003), Griffin (2004), and Lucas (2000). Any other
suggestions?

Another question that you might be able to help me with: I have access to a
university library and thus, to a large number of databases. Which base(s)
are best for searching for museum-related literature (by "museum" I mean
museums, science centers, zoos, aquariums etc.)? I've been using web of
science but it doesn't cover all the science education journals.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Marianne Mortensen
