Longer Statement:
Brave New Works returns to Ann Arbor for two exciting appearances at the
Firefly Club (Wednesday, October 12, 8:00 p.m.) and Kerrytown Concert
House (Saturday, October 8:00 p.m.). This dynamic group, formed by
graduates of the University of Michigan School of Music, is comprised
of string quartet, piano, clarinet, flute, harp and voice and is dedicated
to the promotion of electrifying new music from our time. The musicians
will perform two programs of contrasting repertoire for a variety of
instruments and instrumental combinations.
Wednesday's performance at the Firefly Club will feature virtuosic solo
and duo showpieces. Come enjoy a drink at Ann Arbor's premiere jazz
club while experiencing exciting new sounds, funky beats and extended
techniques.
Saturday's performance at Kerrytown will include Joseph Schwantner's
"Wild Angels of the Open Hills" for voice, flute, harp and mixed percussion,
Magnus Lindberg's Piano Quintet, Sung Ji Hong's "Impetuoso" and Dan
Visconti's "Black Bend" for String Quartet. Both the Hong and the
Visconti were selected from over 165 entries from 18 countries as the
winners of Brave New Works 2005 Composers' Competition.
If you can't catch BNW at either venue, the group will also be performing
at the Detroit Institute of Art on Friday, October 14, 6:30 and 8:00
p.m. and the Art Gallery of Windsor on Sunday, October 16, 2:00 p.m.

Brave New Works
Brave New Works is a vibrant performing ensemble of ten musicians
dedicated to performing and promoting new music. The mission of Brave
New Works is to engage, enrich and educate through contemporary music.
A not-for-profit organization since 2003, Brave New Works was nurtured
by the rich artistic landscape of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and formed in
1997 by three students at the University of Michigan: percussionists
Chris Froh and Eli Shapiro, and conductor Chris Younghoon Kim. The
concept was simple: to make great music, discover new sounds and ideas,
and perform with kindred spirits. The musicians of Brave New Works have
performed all over the world and have collaborated with some of the most
influential composers of the 20th and 21st centuries including Luciano
Berio, Elliott Carter, William Bolcom, Leslie Bassett, and George Crumb.
Brave New Works has commissioned and premiered numerous works for its
unique instrumentation of string quartet, piano, flute, harp, clarinet,
and soprano. The Art of the Fugue Project of 2002 marked Brave New
Works' most ambitious commissioning project, soliciting composers from
around the United States and Europe for scores conceived in response to
Bach's towering masterpiece. Brave New Works has served its educational
mission through several college and university residencies around the
country, including stays at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon,
the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, and an ongoing
relationship with Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. In October
2003 Brave New Works served as Ensemble in Residence at the New Music
and Art Festival at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green,
Ohio. Today, many of the musicians of Brave New Works hold teaching
positions at prestigious colleges and universities around the country,
and all maintain individual performing careers. Brave New Works strives
to uphold the values out of which it was formed and remains true to its
first simple concept: to make great music, discover new sounds and ideas,
and perform with kindred spirits.
