Absolutely. I don't doubt that this is the primary reason people follow
the authorities with no questions asked.
I know from experience, though, that a mother's inner wisdom voices itself
much louder when she is being confronted with mothering recommendations
that are questionable at best (and possibly harmful) than it does when she
is being told her car needs a new muffler or her tooth has a cavity.
This is where we, as breastfeeding professionals, can really make a
difference (as long as we cross paths with these moms). We can encourage
them to listen to their inner wisdom which will rarely steer them wrong.
And I'm not talking about encouraging moms to necessarily do what they
*think* is right (as authorities, the media, our culture, etc. have a lot
to do with what we think); I'm talking about helping moms to access what
*feels* right to them. To the first mom that tells me "My doctor said I
should start giving my one-month-old a pacifier" I will reply "What do you
think about that advice? How does it feel to you?"

As Norma Ritter and I discussed briefly, many people need to be
_taught_ to question info laid in front of them. And then others need
_permission_ to question.
