Breastfeeding May Cause Cavities For Some Babies At Night

(NBC News) - If you're a parent, you've probably heard about the tooth
troubles that Can result from putting a baby to bed with a bottle of juice
or milk. It's been thought that breast feeding may not carry that same risk,
but New research suggests that isn't the case.

"I'm the biggest advocate of breast feeding it's wonderful, the night
feeding gets kind of tricky"

While it's well known that putting baby to bed with a bottle of juice or
milk is linked to tooth troubles, it has been thought breast milk may
actually have a protective effect.

The latest research, a study in rats, finds sugar-based beverages like colas
and honey were the most likely to increase the risk of tooth decay, followed
by breast milk, and then cow's milk - formula wasn't tested.

Rocio Quinonez, DMD, pediatric dentist, states, "Saliva doesn't flow as well
at night and it doesn't have the opportunity to flush away the bacteria"

Researchers say the results don't mean night breast feeding causes cavities,
but suggests it doesn't protect teeth.

Quinonez says, "In terms of fluoridated toothpaste, because he's breast
feeding throughout the night, you may consider a few times a week using
fluoridated toothpaste."

The take home message from researchers: good dental hygiene is key for all
infants, especially those who have teeth and nurse throughout night.
