I don't know if this will help, but....

Here in the Rogue Valley we have a one-of-kind outdoor/department store
called the Blackbird, which has a 45-ft tall statue of it's namesake in the
parking lot. Three or four times a year, that statue gets costumed --
running shorts for the local Pear Blossom race in spring, a santa hat in
December, ect. I called the store to find out how they do the costuming,
and was told they use a safety system of pulleys and harnesses, not
dissimilar to rock climbing gear, to scale the statue and apply the
clothing. If you used something fairly lightweight to make the hat, could
you adapt this technique? Anybody on your staff enjoy rappelling?

Now HERE'S a query you won't hear every day...

Our museum's icon is a concrete/steel, life-sized model of Connecticut's
state animal that sits outside the building: a (male) sperm whale. "Connie"
measures ~60 feet long. This summer marks his 30th birthday, so to speak, so
for an event we're planning a bd bash for the big guy. (Who, btw, won't
admit to being over 29.)

I thought "You know what would be unspeakably funny, plus guarantee all
kinds of photos in the press? Have the whale wear a birthday hat!"

So, any suggestions on how to get a colorful, pointy and very large birthday
hat on something that big?

My name only adds to the irony,
