Graupner and Bach both applied for the position.  Graupner was successful,
but the Landgrave of Darmstadt refused his resignation, offering him
financial and other enticements to stay, thus leaving the position free
for Bach.

Don's original post mentioned that Graupner left a large number of
compositions.  The Grove article on him says:

   "Until his activities were restricted by failing eyesight and
   eventual blindness, Graupner remained extraordinarily prolific,
   producing 1418 church cantatas, 24 secular cantatas, 113 symphonies,
   about 50 concertos, over 80 suites [overtures], 36 sonatas for
   instrumental combinations and a substantial body of keyboard
   music."
