Charles Gounod wrote an original melody "Ave Maria" to the first prelude
of WTC I (sort of.  He may have fudged here and there).  I realize this
isn't what you asked, but are you sure it's the first suite for solo
cello?  After all, it bears a strong family resemblance to the WTC I/P1.
