Marsha, I think we should seperate blueprint from daily practice.
One of the big skills of humans -I think one of the most important to seperate humans from other animals- is that we are so extraoridinairy flexible. We can and do adjust to almost anything. So the mere fact that babies do thrive on more resticted feedings like every 2-3-4 hours does not per se mean that that it is the way it is meant. Some even thrive on mother's milk substitutes!
With all respect to the work of Hartman, but he did study ''the western society way'': milk production and release in a scheduled way. (on a side-note: I do think that Hartman's work is looked upon in a rather religious-like way sometimes; his findings adapted and hugged, even if there are still questions unanswered and new ones shown up <like Jean Cotterman's: then what was it I felt when examining all thos arelo area's all those 25 years when it weren't sinusses?>; I sometimes have the weird feeling that I'm the only one being just a little bit suspicious of his links with medela)
All this being said, having a blueprint, does not mean it is wrong to do otherwise and adapt new bahaviour *if* baby and mom are fine doing so. But: many breastfeeding issues all of us encounter on a daily basis do have a remarkable positive change is feeding frequency is increased.

Met vriendelijke groet,
