I have been wondering for a long time if moms who experience a home or home-
like birth undergo lactogenesis II in less than 24 hours.
Dear Friends:
I heard a story from a lactation consultant about another lactation
consultant, (as I recall the story, I believe it was Chele Marmet) who was
visiting a hospital in Japan. The babies stayed in bed with the mothers and nursed
up to 20 times the first day; the mothers milk volume did increase by the end
of the first 24 hours.
I am certain that many of our 'standards' are artifacts of
factory-modeled births; i.e. 'milk volume to increase by day 3-4', babies should feed at
least 8 times in 24 hours, babies don't smile in the first
weeks..........those are the ones that jump to my mind right away.
We know from the research of Dewey and others that stress has a
postponing effect on Lactogenesis II. Stress can be a variety of things (long labor,
surgical delivery etc. etc.) as well as separation between mother and baby.
