Catherine Genna Watson kindly sent the following information via e-mail
(being that she was over the daily post limit):
"Babies born at home generally bf 16 or more times a day the first few
days. This not only gets them enough colostrum to maintain their weight,
but brings in a larger milk supply sooner. Dewey did a study that measured
milk vol vs freq of feeding on day 2, and included home born babies, and 2
diff hospitals (baby friendly and traditional feeding)."
Incidentally, my daughter's birth and hospital stay resembled that of
Beth's daughter: drug-free, no-intervention birth, with me (on me!) the
entire time, nursing at will. Her birth weight was 8 lbs., discharge weight
at 7 lbs. 7 oz., and back to birthweight by day 4. She was pleasantly plump
in the early months and is now a lanky young critter of about 24 lbs. at 21
months (and currently scattering every paperclip I own).
regards,
Julia
