I read with interest the stories about breastfeeding at FAO Schwartz
and
the statue at the Lever Building. I was in New York earlier this month
and had a moment that blew me away.
My 17 yr old daughter, 13 yr old son and I were in Central Park at
Stawberry Fields, sitting and enjoying the peace of this space. There
were people all around, all respectful of this designated quiet area.
It's where the John Lennon "Imagine" mosaic is located. Some were
eating
lunch, some just resting, one lovely mother was sitting and nursing
her
baby. Her mother was with her and they were quietly talking and
enjoying
the day. The way the mother had baby positioned it was impossible to
see
breast, although my kids noticed her right away and smiled.
Then, a group of teens came thru the area in a rowdy manner. One girl
who had on a black t shirt w/write writing that said in large letters,
"F&*% You, YOU F&*%$#@ F&*%!!!" came thru, looked at the mom and
yelled loudly, "That is SO DISGUSTING! OHMYGAWD! SHE'S BREASTFEEDING
THAT BABY IN PUBLIC! HOW GROSS!!!" My kids and I were in shock.
Frankly, the message on the girl's shirt wasn't half as offensive as
her
attitude. It blew me away that in this gorgeous space in Central Park,
clearly devoted to the concept of peace that this kid spouted her lack
of tolerance. For me it was a clear example of what many of our teens
have been taught. The F-word is not censorable, however, a
breastfeeding
mother is.
Just an observation...
