Lucy, once you open the bag and sterilize the new parts for the mother, you
will be taking responsibility or liability for the collection kit having
flaws, damage, etc. I see a problem for you if you sterilized the collection
kit before she bought it. A much better thing would be to have the mother
pay for the pump, then pump and dump with you as you show her how to use the
pump, and then sterilize the parts at home.
Medela makes those sterilizer bags, might be worth purchasing some and
giving them away, or selling one at a nominal cost to appease the MD.
Explain to the doctor that opening the bag and sterilizing the parts before
the sale might void the warranty. Contact Medela on this -- I know many pump
dealers won't take back a pump where the bags holding the plastic pieces are
opened.
If this is for hospitalized babies, thus the MD's concern, these mothers
should be using a rental or hospital grade pump and those collection kits
can come sterilized already.
Just a few thoughts, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
