The judicial decision yesterday in the plaintiffs case against the
Dover, Pa school board is a stake in the heart of ID. It will be
very, very hard for ID to be taught in public schools in this country
and that is wonderful.

However, we still need to present evolution science to our audiences
of adults and especially children. This decision does not effect the
polls that show that the majority of our population do not understand
or accept evolution science (anymore that than they understand that
the earth takes a year to go around the sun or that man and dinosaurs
lived together at the same time on Earth). Teachers may have an
easier time teaching evolution as the decision may give teachers
heart to incorporate evolution in to their classrooms and immunize
them against parental complaints. That remains to be seen.

I recently received this DVD and I think it could be a good resource
for your use in presenting the relevance of evolution science to your
public. Probably not for very young children.

Enjoy the Solstice, Christmas, Hanukkah or whatever you choose to celebrate.

NEW! Evolution-Why Bother?
2005. AIBS, the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, and Why Bother
Films have produced a 27-minute video, endorsed for classroom use by
the National Association of Biology Teachers, that contains
interviews with eminent scientists and relevant information to
enhance students', teachers', and the general public's understanding
of the relevance of evolution to daily life and to meeting numerous
challenges facing society. Topics addressed include the use of
evolutionary biology to guide our search for new medicines, help
solve crimes, develop vaccines, combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria,
deal with invasive species, grow our food, provide a rational basis
for managing resources, protect endangered species, and use
phylogenetic analyses to identify emerging diseases. DVD and VHS
format. $34.95 each ($29.95 for AIBS members), plus shipping and
handling. http://www.aibs.org/bookstore/
