Dear ASTC community,

We would like to alert you of the upcoming launch of a new NASA
mission to study the Sun and its effects on Earth. The
Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) mission will launch
two satellites in the Spring of 2006 to observe the Sun from two
different perspectives. One satellite will lead Earth in its orbit
around the Sun and the second will trail behind Earth. At the
beginning of the mission, it will be possible to create
three-dimensional views of the Sun and its giant explosions from the
corona, called Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). These images will allow
scientists to study the structure of CMEs as they travel out into
space, especially those coming toward Earth. Additionally, other
instruments will study the particles, electromagnetic fields, and
radio waves of CMEs as they pass by the satellites (in-situ data).
For more information visit NASA's website about the STEREO mission:
http://www.nasa.gov/stereo.

As part of the education and public outreach (E/PO) program for
STEREO, we would like to present the 3-D imagery and other data to
the public in interesting ways. For example, we are working on
methods to produce 3-D imagery from the spacecraft telescopes as well
as techniques of presenting the in-situ data aurally rather than
visually (a process called sonification).

We would like to know what possibilities there exist in museums and
science centers around the U.S. to make use of imagery and sounds we
may create, as well as gauge the interest of your community in
creating programming in coordination with the launch of this mission.
We would very much appreciate if you would send an email to Bryan
Mendez ([log in to unmask]) with answers to the following
questions:

1) Would your science center/museum be interested in producing
programming in coordination with the launch of STEREO (i.e. lectures
by scientists, etc.)? Please note that data from STEREO will not be
available to present to the public until approximately 3 months
following the launch.

2) Does your science center or museum currently have a 3-D theater?
If yes: a) What size theater is it?
		  b) What technology do you use for the 3-D effects?
		  c) What type of sound does your theater use?

If no: a) Does your center or museum have a plan to create one?
		 b) Would you like to have one?

3) Are you aware of the ViewSpace system and programming produced by
the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, MD?
If yes: a) Do you have one or are you planning on purchasing one?
		  b) Would you be interested in STEREO mission
programming for ViewSpace?

If no: you can learn more about it at
http://hubblesource.stsci.edu/exhibits/viewspace/.
		 a) Would you be interested in ViewSpace?
		 b) Would you be interested in STEREO mission
programming for ViewSpace?

Thank you very much, and we look forward to your response.

Bryan Mendez for the STEREO E/PO team
