Here are three excellent texts:

The Magic Years by Selma H. Fraiberg, The Interpersonal World of the Infant,
by Daniel N. Stern and The Psychological Birth of the Human Infant by
Margaret S. Mahler, Fred Pine, and Anni Bergman. There is another book
called Child Development - A Practioner's Guide by Douglas Davies that does
not go into as much depth as the other books, but has an excellent overview
of many different theorists that you may then want to explore further.

Good luck!
Robin Frisch

"Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it
alone is the free expression of what is in a child's soul."
 ~Frederick Froebel

> There are two texts I can recommend that have been helpful. One is Educational
> Psychology by Anita E. Woolfolk published by Allen and Bacon. Includes
> developmental theories and their implication for educational practice. The
> second is a classic childhood development text called The Development of
> Children, published by W.H. Freedman, edited by Cole & Cole.
