I would recommend Salvatore Accardo for starters, because from what I
remember he has one of the best balances of technique, musicianship and
audio engineering. (Accardo sort of made his name as a Paganini specialist,
at least in the US.) After this there's a world to choose from: On the
Russian front there's Leonid Kogan and Victor Tretyakov. Although these
two violinists are not really in the same league, Tretyakov was famous
in the 80s for his recording, while the powerhouse Kogan was well known
for Paganini in general, as well as other composers. On the American
front there's Michael Rabin, whose cadenza sounds incredible, and just
the other day I heard Midori's recording, which I enjoyed. I know these
last two are available on CD, but I would spend my money on the first
three mentioned, if possible.
