I worked with a mother whose baby had been nursing well for several days
before the cleft was found. She was referred to the cleft palate clinic
who told her she couldn't breastfeed because that wasn't possible with a
cleft of the soft palate. She was in tears thinking she would have to
wean her baby who was breastfeeding well. I reassured her she did not
have to "fix" something that wasn't broken. So I would suggest that it
matters greatly how severe the cleft and where it is placed as far as
how well breastfeeding will go.
