Ahh, once again Australia leads the world.... :(
"sleep training" is alive and well in Australia, and has been for many
years. I took my eldest son to "sleep school" when he was 5 mnths old.
Thankfully for him and me, we failed. He kept waking up until on the
suggestion of a fabulous ABA counsellor, I took him to bed with me. Where
he stayed til he was...oh, I can't remember now, and it's not very
important.(5,6,7 something like that)
Open any "Child" newspaper in Australia and you can see ads from people who
will come to your house and teach your baby to sleep. The government pays
for whole programs/facilities to teach this to mothers.
Some of the more interesting suggestions from the IBCLCs/midwives who are
paid by the government to run the one near me include
"You mustn't put baby in a sling - it will be overstimulated, it will never
sleep and it won't ever go in it's pram." (The prams are generally big
black coffin like things heavily covered so the babe can't see the outside
world and will sleep"
"You must take all the pictures off the wall , mobiles off the ceiling so
baby will sleep"
Babies are taken from 2 weeks of age.....
Scheduled feeds, of course! No mother would have the time to sit around
breastfeeding all day, would they?
