How much cramping is normal when breastfeeding during pregnancy? I just
spoke with a mother who is breastfeeding her 7 month old and has just found
out that she is pregnant. She has no idea how far along she is. She has
only had one menstrual cycle and that was in August. She is out of town and
cannot get in to see her OB until Wednesday. She is experiencing cramping
during breastfeeding or pumping and for at least 30 minutes afterwards. Her
other concern is that her milk supply is low. How can she increase milk
supply if she continues breastfeeding? Her 7 month old will not take a
bottle, nor will he take breastmilk or formula in a cup. The mother is
afraid to continue breastfeeding, but she is also worried about her infant
if she weans. To make matters more complicated, she has yeast/thrush. I
have assured her that some cramping is normal, but I wasn't sure how much is
normal. It seems from what I have read that uterine cramping during
breastfeeding does not cause preterm labor or miscarriage. Is this correct?
I would love to be able to reassure this mom. Thanks for any information
you can share.
