allergy blood and skin tests in baby will reveal nothing if baby just
has 'gut' allergies.
the only thing i've found helpful is to go to a rare foods, bare bones diet.
from each group, pick one food that has rarely or never been eaten:
starch (millet, japanese sweet potatoes or quinoa)
protein (turkey - if rarely eaten, buffalo, ostrich, duck)
veggie (zucchini, summer sqaush are *generally* okay)
cook only with salt, pepper and olive oil. the easiest way to do
this diet is to make up a *bunch* at one time so that something is
always available to mom and she's not having to prepare food for each
meal. ie bake a large portion of the protein in the oven....then use
the *half* the drippings from that, plus some more oill to sautee a
lot of the veggies. use the other half of the drippings from the
protein to flavor the millet/quinoa. if using japanese sweet potatos,
just cut into wedges, toss with olive oil and salt. bake at 425 for
25 minutes.
there is a hypo-allergenic multi available from twinlab called
"allergy multi' to help boost moms nutritional status while on such a
restrictive diet. additional cal/mag will need to be taken to bring
calcium intake to the recommended 1500 mg. Inexpensive "allergen
free" cal/mag can be found if the calcium carbonate/magnesium oxide
form is used. One brand is Now Calcium & Magnesium. Both can be
found at iherb.com for probably the best prices available anywhere.
it's tricky, and i've known more than one mom who's had to stay very
restricted for quite some time. There is a LLL leader here who was
still doing it last time i heard from her at 5 mo. Her hx and baby's
hx were exactly what you described. Even adding in carrots triggered
bloody stools (though different triggers will be found for different
babies).
I'm happy to pass on her email, just email me privately.....
Best of luck to this mom,
katherien in atl
