BUILDING COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS
A distance learning opportunity from the University of Victoria
Strong, sustained, and mutually beneficial relationships with
communities are critical to museums, cultural, and heritage
organizations and not-for profit organizations seeking to play timely,
relevant, positive, and socially responsible roles in society. This
distance education opportunity builds your knowledge and skill
associated with effective community cultural and social development
activities, and strengthens your capacity to:
* assess personal, professional, and organizational readiness to
initiate community partnerships
* identify community characteristics and needs
* define potential community roles and relationships
* acquire personal and organizational community cultural
development competencies
* build and sustain reciprocal, mutually beneficial relationships
with diverse groups through a range of appropriate and collaborative
initiatives
* interact with communities in respectful and culturally
appropriate ways
* include and balance diverse perspectives associated with
effective community cultural and social development activities
* deal with controversy and resolve conflict
* measure the effectiveness of community partnerships
This distance education opportunity is designed to meet the needs of a
range of individuals who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in
community-centred practice, including:
* professionals working within museums, galleries, heritage or
other cultural organizations
* professionals from libraries, archives, zoos, aquariums and
other relevant educational institutions
* committed volunteers working closely with and in support of
cultural or educational organizations
* cultural workers who operate in partnership with the public in
cultural centres, community centres, or educational or heritage
institutions
* cultural policy makers, funders, and liaisons
* members of ethnic and cultural minority groups working with or
considering building relationships with any of the above type of
organizations
* members of organizations that have as part of their mission to
work with and on behalf of a communities; including charitable
organizations, NGOs, service organizations, or church groups
