Seeking the “Brightest and Best” Project during FY 2004 in NPS Park

Archeology



The National Park Service's John L. Cotter Award Committee is requesting

nominations of archeological projects conducted during FY 2004 (October 1,

2003 to September 30, 2004) for the John L. Cotter Award for Excellence in

National Park Service Archeology.



The Cotter Award recognizes outstanding archeological work in the Service's

Park Archeology Program. The award was established in 1999 to honor Dr.

Cotter’s distinguished career and pioneering contributions to professional

archeology within the National Park System. The award serves as inspiration

for archeologists today to continue Dr. Cotter’s model of excellence in

scientific archeology. A project conducted by NPS staff and/or partner(s)

within the National Park System that meets or exceeds the award criteria is

recognized each fiscal year in a public manner. This award was developed by

agency staff and is not an official recognition by the National Park

Service within the agency’s awards program and does not carry a monetary

value or official agency recognition of an activity’s merits. The award is

unofficial peer recognition to encourage and inspire participants in the

Service’s Park Archeology Program by highlighting an exemplary local

archeological activity.



Projects conducted within a unit of the National Park System by staff,

partners, permitees or consultants, and guided by an NPS archeologist, are

eligible for nomination. Projects may include site inventories,

excavations, testing or assessment, compliance or mitigation; may be a

public symposia focused on NPS archeology or a collection analysis; or may

be a combination of these activities. Student involvement, community

outreach, and publication are important criteria.  Individuals need not be

employed by the National Park System to make a nomination.



The Committee will review and rank nominated projects.  Currently, the

Committee consists of Co-Chairs, Roger Kelly and David Orr; and members

Jeff Burton, Joseph Labadie, Ken Wild, and Jim Bradford.



Individuals interested in obtaining the guidelines and criteria for

nomination, or in making nominations, should contact directly the Committee

Co-Chairs, Dr. Kelly or Dr. Orr (contact information below).  Send

electronic nominations, following the recommended format, to Martha Graham,

Archeology Program, National Center for Cultural Resources, Washington, DC

Please give your attention to this opportunity for seeking the “brightest

and best” project and leadership within the National Park System!

Announcement and presentation of a winning project will be made at the

George Wright Society meetings or the Society for American Archeology

annual meeting this spring.



Deadline?   Yes – February 25, 2005.  We’ll need to move fast if we are to

be able to announce a winner at these March and April conferences.
