Friends and colleagues: The forced removal of the Cherokee from their
ancestral homeland led to the tragic "Trail of Tears." We feature the
remarkable history of the Cherokee in The New Echota Traditional Cultural
Properties Study, the latest video offering on our nonprofit streaming-media
Web site, The Archaeology Channel (http://www.archaeologychannel.org).

New Echota was the first capitol of the Cherokee Nation from 1825-1838,
prior to their banishment from the Southeast U.S. Although New Echota's
historical significance had long been recognized, the U.S. Federal Highway
Administration Georgia Division and the Georgia Department of Transportation
initiated a Traditional Cultural Property study to determine the continuing
significance of New Echota in the lives of the Cherokee people. This video
depicts the history of the Cherokee Nation and the meaning of New Echota.
