Laura, this reminds me of when my DIL was told that her day-old son
*must be* dehydrated because he had been crying tears! Never mind
that he had nursed 17 times in the first 24 hours and had produced
loads of wet and poopy diapers!

Laura asked:
>Can someone please give me a what we would consider a formal definition
of dehydration in the breastfed baby who is 2-3 days old or is this even
possible? There are a couple of nurses on our unit who use the term
when talking to the mothers about their baby's need to be supplemented.
A two day old breastfed baby who is transferring colostrum/milk and has
some brick dust urine in the diaper or who's lips are dry doesn't
constitute dehydration right??? My lips are dry after I've been here at
work for 15 minutes because of the dry heat! These mothers get scared
out of their wits let alone see their confidence level that you've built
up all day go right down the drain. This has been addressed in the past
with these people, just looking for proper use or not of this very scary
word from other professionals. Thank you!
