I don't know anything about the Portable Antiquities Scheme, but
similar collector's events have been used productively in the US
to create a dialog between collectors and professionals with the
goals of learning of sites and site locations from the collectors
and of educating collectors on the importance of context, and
emphasizing the scientific value rather than the
collector/antiquities market value. Really no different than an
interested collector bringing his junk to the museum to find out
what they have; its just going on location.

I know that we can't make collectors go away by ignoring them,
and in my experience there has been no great increase in
collecting because we talk to them. Bottom line, the collecting
community generally knows a lot more than we do about the
location and contents of sites and we need to recognize this and
have the dialog.

Anyone else notice the following activity at "Disaster Day"?

"Bring an archaeological find to be identified by an expert from
the Portable Antiquities Scheme!"

I hesitate to criticize this without knowing all of the details,
but doesn't this have the potential to encourage pot-hunting?
