The only connection this has with Lactnet is that the etymological
dictionary was mentioned by Jo-Anne Elder-Gomes a few days ago.
I looked up “political”.
“Politicks is the science of good sense, applied to public affairs…” (Fisher
Ames, 1758-1808)
Curiosities, esp. relevant for US residents
Democrat: one who believes in rule (cracy) by the people (demo)
Republican: one who believes in a republic, which is a thing ruled by the
people
Goo-goo: short for ‘good government’, a movement to clean up municipal
corruption in large US cities, which quickly came to mean “naïve political
reformer”
I’m with Heather on this one. Partisan politics are neither appropriate nor
of interest on Lactnet. But everything, including breastfeeding, is
political, in the fundamental sense of ‘having to do with the people in the
state’.
