This sounds very much like anovulitory bleeding. A cycle with out ovulation.
When i experienced it while nursing my daughter and when my friend
experienced it during menopause we were both offered a high dose ibuprophen
800mg because the prostgladin inhibitors  would help stop the bleeding. Now
I am obviously not a doctor or  nurse but she may want to ask hep MD about
this option. It worked for us. Time did to though just would have 1-2 days
of heavy bleeding.
