Just to add another professions persepctive, I am a CPA Candidate. This
means I passed the test but have to fulfill the experience requirement. I
wouldn't have been allowed to use this title before I passed the exam even
though I had the education requirement and was scheduled to sit for the exam
or even after I'd sat for it but didn't know I passed. If I had, there
would have been the possibility of sanctions by the AICPA if they'd found
out.

Also, just to show how restrictive professions are of their licensing - I
cannot call myself a CPA even though I have fulfilled the experience
requirement and am just waiting for veirfication - it would be considered
misrepresentation and poss. fraud depending on the circumstances. It's
irritating but it is what helps keep the CPA title worth as much as it is.

THat said, I think the most someone could do is refer to themelves as a
aspiring LC - anymore than that runs the risk of confusing a mother into
thinking she is somehow more qualified than she neccesarily is. The other
problem is that although it is illegal to hire yourself out as an MD of you
aren't one, it would be legal to hire yourself out as a Breastfeeding
Consultant without being an IBCLC and using those letters in your signature
line or on a business card could mislead a potential client.

Just my 2 cents

Warmly,
Jennifer Cassini, LLLL
