I've been holding my breath w/ this mother and the complicated case. Thank
you to everyone in this superb community who plied me w/ support,
encouragement and suggestions. Thank you to Dr. Kute who sent a summary of
the case to a discussion group of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.

The mother with repeated abscesses and 3 surgeries decided to continue
nursing on the unaffected side since the affected side was so severely
affected by surgery that supply was minimal. After all consulted surgeons
in the area said she needed to wean to heal (and even one highly-respected
doc from the ABM said that she would need to do so to "completely heal" w/
no reasons given), the mother persevered. Amazingly <g>, she is essentially
healed at the 6-week mark from the last surgery where the underside incision
close to the areola was more than 7 cm deep. At the 4-week mark (suggested
as the "healing point" by Riordan), she was unable to keep the packing gauze
in place.

Yippee!

Now for the time to write up the case since not much (nothing I've found) is
documented in the literature. The mother is scheduling appts. w/ the
surgeons just so they can see her while she whips out her unaffected breast
to nurse her almost-5-month old <g>.

Thanks again,
Rebecca DeYoung Daniels, MBA, RD, LD, IBCLC, RLC & MOM to 5 who is hoping
that pride does not go before a fall in this case <g>
