I may be late in relaying this so forgive me if this topic has already been
discussed. I just received a newsletter from Nestle Nutrition Institute.
Actually it was sent to the "Head Nurse Birthing Room/Labor and
delivery...but our department secretary, a breastfeeding mom herself,
usually sends all Newborn Care and Parenting information to me. The first
article entitled " Breastfeeding and Other Means for Preventing Food
Allergies" discusses a theory called the "hygiene hypothesis", here is a
quote from this newsletter:
"According to this theory, protection from gastrointestinal infections early
in life via breastfeeding or formulas made with sterile water may lead to a
more "naive" development of the immune system and increase the risk of
developing hypersensitivity to proteins later in life. "

The article does include a rare few sentences (2) that are positive about
breastfeeding but even those sentences are still colored with subtle
negativity. Like the statement " Breastfeeding has been the gold standard
for food allergy prevention since a study almost 75 years ago.... More
recently..." The article sites medical journals throughout and although the
title says breastfeeding, I counted a total of only 4 times that
breastfeeding was actually used or referred to in a sentence.

Wonder how many moms would buy their baby's food or take nutritional advise
for their family from the same company that makes dog food. Have you ever
noticed how the sentences on their pet food bags regarding canine and feline
nutrition sound very similar to their sentences regarding infant nutrition?
I think about that each time I buy dog food and pass the Nestle' Purina
bags. Ok... I know, now I am just acting ugly...
