While we certainly don't want to make moms feel that such "equipment" is
essential to nursing, there is one advantage of the nursing pillows over
regular bed pillows. I have observed, especially in the hospital, that
regular pillows don't necessarily stay where you place them. Mom can give
herself and baby great pillow support only to have them slip away if she
moves. A shaped pillow is more likely to stay in place around the mom.

To me the biggest disadvantage is that they don't always support baby in an
effective nursing position. This is especially true in the early postpartum
period when mom still "has a belly". Too many times the nursing pillow
winds up on top of mom's tummy placing baby way to high in relation to the
breast. Or, it may be so far away from mom that baby is sandwiched between
mom's tummy and the pillow which can keep baby from tilting its head back to
get a good asymmetric latch.

There are appropriate and inappropriate uses for any equipment!

Winnie
