I have a mother of a 7-week old baby. She has had three bouts of
mastitis, back-to-back. The first episode she was put on Keflex. She
never got well after 7 days, and was then put on Dicloxicillan for
another 10 days. She immediately became feverish again after this round
of antibiotics, and was placed once again on Diclox. She has just
finished this round, and is now becoming feversih once again.

I have recommended she call her OB about getting on lose dose of
Erythromycin (per Dr. LAwrence, this can be taken for the duration of
lactation - has anyone had a mom do this?).

Baby is a "snacker", only nursing for 5-10 minutes on one side each
feeding. He is growing like a weed. Mom says she only pumps once per
day, first thing in the morning, when she is super full.

Mom's other big problem on the mastitic breast is over supply and
overactive letdown. Normally I would recommend one-sided nursing to
control the flow, pumping only for comfort on the side not nursed on,
howver I am a little hesitant to recommend this since mom seems to be on
the verge of another mastitis. What would you do?

Thanks, I hope someone can give me some good advice.

Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
