This still leaves open the question as to why less insulin is needed. Even
given the increase metabolic activity, the mother still needs insulin to
unlock the cells in order to convert the glucose to lactose. Without
insulin the glucose will just circulate in the blood stream - therefore
high blood sugar levels. For example, in times of sickness someone with
type-1 becomes more insulin resistant (needing more insulin). What has
changed metabolically?
So, what in contrast has changed while in the "lactating state" where the
mother's body utilizes the insulin better therefor needing less?
