I've got out that old EMI LP of Klemperer conducting his 2nd Symphony &
had a listen. Thought at first I had found the long-lost missing movements
of <Das Lied von der Erde>. As befits someone who cut his musical teeth
in the Mahler circle, Klemperer writes (here, at least) in a continuation
of Mahler's style, if perhaps a bit angrier and with less sentimentality.
The sound on that LP, by the way, has to heard to be believed. Shrill
and tinny, like children's records played on a '50s kiddie phonograph.
The music may merit another listen, but the sonic quality sets up quite
a barrier.
