Hello Gina,
We have a very large sandbox in our Preschool Sandplay exhibit. We purchase washed, dust-free sand in bags from Home Depot.  We feature a program for preschoolers titled, "Kids Dig!" We section off the sandbox like an excavation site, bury "artifacts" in the sand and allow the children to "dig" for the items. The sand is changed once or twice each year. We haven't experienced any safety problems in the seven years I've been at the museum.

Good morning,

During a brainstorm, we had the idea of creating a dinosaur excavation pit for one of the forthcoming temporary exhibitions and the issue of SAND & SAFETY came up.

Does anyone have any experience / knowledge of what are the latest regulations on using sand with children. 

Has anybody ever used another material that could represent sand?

Any help will be much appreciated.
