Dear HISTARCH members,

Uplands Archaeology in the East Sumposium IX will be held at
James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA, from Feb. 6-8,
2004.

I have posted a very simple web site that contains
information pertaining to the conference (directions,
registration and hotel info., program and abstracts). This
can be accessed at:

http://www.common-ground.net/uplands/

We are pleased that this year's Uplands features 43 papers
by presenters from New York to Alabama, with several historic
and prehistoric sessions.

For those of you who are new to this, the Uplands Archaeology
Symposium Series was created in 1981 by archaeologists
interested in bringing the (then) new field of mountain-
related research into the mainstream. The U.S. Forest
Service has been instrumental in keeping the series going; we
meet every 3-4 years. James Madison University also has a
long-term commitment to the symposia, hosting eight of the
nine meetings. To date, six edited volumes of papers have
been completed and are sold through the Archeological Society
of Virginia (http://asv-archeology.org/).

Uplands has developed into a solid regional conference,
providing a forum for archaeologists throughout the eastern
United States. This year's symposium offers new approaches
to theory and method that also speak to practice in non-
mountainous areas.

Please pass on the URL to other colleagues and students who
might be interested. Undergrads are especially invited. The
symposium is open to the public, and there will be a book
room this year with exhibits from several University
Presses and regional archaeological organizations. Our
Saturday night reception is always a hoot.

The pre-registration cut-off date is 1/28/04; registration at
the table the day of the conference increases by $5 per
category.

Please contact me if you have questions.
