Any amount of breastmilk is a benefit. A small amount is not as
powerful as a large amount, but it has power nonetheless
Dear Friends:
I know that there is one thread of breastfeeding support that values any
human milk intake. However, Anna Coutsoudis and her research team found that
it was the babies receiving mixed feeds (as opposed to both exclusive
breastfeeding and exclusive bottle feeding) that had the greatest transmission of HIV.
One the other hand, partial breastfeeding has been shown to have protective
value as a prevention for diarrhea, and some other things. And we want a
woman to feel successful, because then she will tell her friends that
breastfeeding was a good experience; research shows that helps our cause.
However, I have started saying over the past years, when a woman tells me
that she only breastfed for a few days or weeks, that I am sorry to hear that
and did she have any help with breastfeeding.
What a complicated issue this all is.
    warmly,
