To add further to the discussion on breastfeeding rhetoric.... Culture influences the degree the degree to which we view breastfeeding as a process or as a product. When we speak of risks, I think it is helpful to consider these two views. Depending on its context, the statement "the risks of not breastfeeding" tends to better reflect breastfeeding as a process. The statement "the risks of non-human milk" reflects breastfeeding as a product divorced from the process by which that milk is obtained. The risks of "not breastfeeding" or of "feeding artificially" (mothers can breastfeed, human milk feed, formula feed, etc., alone or in combination) are created from the lack of species-specific milk and the lack of the species-specific process of obtaining that milk, as well as from the introduction of products and processes that are not specific to our species.
