Thanks for all those who have replied to my query.

Our Infection control IC) team is also concerned about the mother's
equipment and silicone shield being contaminated at the sinks. We have a
problem with Psuedomonas and other water borne "bugs". The goal is to
reduce risks as much as possible.

that
NICU staff are carrying on their hands? I will ask Ruth Lawrence to pass it
by
her son, Robert, who is an ID specialist, for his comments<<

Dr. Wight's comment is aptly put. They are concerned with any viruses cross
contaminating the mother's equipment.
The IC staff are as passionate with their job as much as I am with mine.
I have made no progress in removal of biohazard approach to breastmilk.
Unfortunately, this is how our hospital chooses to deal with even the most
remote possibility of its causing bloodborne disease. I am glad to share any
references with the IC people and am interested to hear comments from Dr.
Lawrence's son.

My hospital looks to other Children's Hospitals for benchmarks in policy
setting. If any other NICUs from Children's Hospitals, esp those in CHCA, I
would like to hear their remarks as to cleaning of breast pump equipment.

I have at my office the article in April 2003 Journal of Perinatal and
Neonatal Nursing that Barbara recommended. Thanks for all the quick
replies.
