Esther, the few times I use finger feeding in the hospital is when the baby
refuses to latch but the medical team wants the baby to be fed. I have the
mother wash her hands so it is always the mother's finger that does the finger
feeding. I try to have some expressed breast milk, which I draw up into a
syringe, for the feeding. Once the mother has her finger in place and the baby
demonstrates sucking then I place the syringe at the corner of the mouth and
gently drop in milk while the baby sucks. If the baby stops sucking, I stop the
drops of milk waiting until the next sucking burst. This way I can guarantee
that almost all of mom's milk gets into the baby and the mother can do some
suck training at the same time.
