More than 26 years ago, my best friend gave birth to a premature baby who
became sick with Beta Strep at McMaster hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. She
also had a toddler. She was given on of the doctor's "on-call" rooms (it
contained two bunk beds) to stay in while the baby was in the hospital, and
I came along and shared the room with her and helped look after the toddler.
She was pumping her milk for her own baby, and when the nursing staff
noticed me breastfeeding my toddler son as well, they asked me if I would
consider pumping some of my milk for them to use with the premie babies.
This was before AIDS and other concerns, and they didn't seem at all
concerned that my milk was "toddler milk." It made me happy to feel that I
was contributing something for these tiny little babies.
