Did anyone catch the segment on the Today Show this morning promoting
elective c-section? It was terribly one sided. An OB having her first child describes
why elective c-section was a good choice for her. Her reasons...she didn't
want to pee her pants, the recovery is as safe and easy as vaginal birth, no
pain for the woman. It was also suggested that elective c-section is a
pro-feminist issue. There was no mention of breastfeeding, effects on baby, or the fact
that this is major abdominal surgery.
Another OB was interviewed and stated that the reasons not to opt for
c-section when not medically indicated would be if the woman intended to have more
than two children. In that case there could be a build up of scar tissue and
therefore it may be unsafe. I guess that means VBAC is out too.
I am certainly not trying to start a c-section discussion on Lacnet but
thought if anyone had seen the piece they might drop Today a note asking them to
please follow up with the other side including the effects on breastfeeding. You
can read more by logging on to the NBC TODAY show website. The info is on
there today. heather Dana
