It would be possible (and simple) to create an application that launches at
start-up and essentially replaces the desktop. That way you could customise
it as much as you like.

Greetings all,

Can any of you recommend a reliable desktop manager/shell program to be
used in a children's museum.  I am looking for an application that upon
startup will display 3-5 large buttons for the applications that
visitors can access.  Most applications that I am seeing have smaller
buttons and complicated background images.
